It brought back memories of my old atheistic resistance to this story and reminded me of John Shelby Spong’s comment a few years back challenging the historicity of this event.

Spong believes the Gospel writer (someone other than the apostle John, by the way) exaggerated the fictional narrative. In the story of Lazarus, Jesus speaks one of the most powerful messages ever: "Whoever believes in Jesus Christ, receives spiritual life that even physical death can never take away."As a result of this incredible miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead, many people believed that Jesus was the Son of God and put their faith in Christ.

Through it, Jesus showed the disciples, and the world. Download The Raising of Lazarus and God’s Timing book pdf free download link or read online here in PDF. Lazarus of Bethany, also known as Saint Lazarus or Lazarus of the Four Days, venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as (Righteous) Lazarus the Four Days Dead after he rose again, is the subject of a prominent sign of Jesus in the Gospel of John, in which Jesus restores him to life four days after his Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions offer varying accounts of the later.

This time we look at the very well known raising of Lazarus from the dead. A place where the disciples truly seen that Jesus was Omnipotent, and Omniscient, as He knew that Lazarus. The Raising of Lazarus John The shortest verse in the Bible is a two-word sentence: “Jesus wept” (Jn ).

(Sometimes the verse is translated as “Jesus began to weep.”) Jesus cried when he learned of his friend Lazarus’s death, but the story does not end there.

He brings his friend back to. In the case of the Gospel of John, this story of the raising of Lazarus serves as a catalyst leading up to Jesus’ own death and resurrection. (The synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke also contain a story of Jesus’ raising the dead, but in those three cases it is Jairus’ daughter (Matt.

Mark and Luke ). Background: John was in the process of being recognized as an elder of our church when he died of cancer, still in his 30s. The funeral is from John 11 and the raising of Lazarus. John Smith died at the age of 38, leaving behind his wife and three children.

It is found in John chapter eleven. It is seen as proof positive that Jesus is God and that He has effectual power over mankind. This is the seventh miracle that Jesus has performed and it is the capstone of all His miracles in the New Testament.

The reason being, Lazarus seals the deal that Jesus is going to die. But, first, let’s back the story up a bit. According to J Lazarus was deteriorating rapidly. He was pretty sick. John reads: Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

The concurrence of this miracle to the Sanhedrin’s determination to kill Jesus (John ), which is the pivotal point of the book, makes the raising of Lazarus the pre-eminent miracle in the Gospel of John. THE RAISING OF LAZARUS FROM THE DEAD () A Sickness for the Glory of God (vv.

) The Illness Conveyed (vv. This poem was written during the fifth week of Lent, when the gospel of the raising of Lazarus is read either on Sunday or, as this year, on an alternative weekday.

It was not written for Holy Saturday, but it seems appropriate as a reflection on one connection between the story of Lazarus of Bethany and the story of Jesus as we recall the line.

If you want to be amazed and have your faith affirmed, join the journey as God raises Lazarus. Raising Lazarus was the final public action of Jesus—at least according to the unknown, anonymous author we call “John” in his theologically constructed narrative.

The omission of Lazarus from the Synoptics is particularly puzzling because Lazarus is an important figure in John’s Gospel. John tells us that the crowds that gathered Easter week were there to see Jesus AND Lazarus, Johnand also that the authorities plotted to kill Lazarus.

However, Christ’s friend Lazarus has grown gravely ill and is in danger of death, and so his sisters Mary and Martha send word to Jesus: “The one you love is ill.”. The calling forth of Lazarus, as dramatic as it is, remains only a miracle in the physical order. The greater miracles are in the realm of the spirit.

Though it may not seem so to us, the redemption of the world is a greater act than its creation. The raising of Lazarus, like the previous Lenten gospels from John (chs.

4, 9) points to Baptism. Jesus’ prayer was answered: Lazarus came back to life, and “many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him” (John ). When Jesus called to Lazarus, Lazarus emerged from the tomb—not a zombie or half-dead or undead, but fully alive and well.

Such is the power of Christ. Jesus Raised Lazarus Word Scramble The story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead found in John chapter 11 is a lengthy but important story.

And while it is packed with heavy theological insights, it is also an important story for children to learn about.

Lazarus was very ill, so Martha and Mary sent a message to Jesus, asking him to come. Jesus received the message, but put off coming for two days.

In the meantime, Lazarus died of his illness. The house went into mourning. As was the custom, a continual stream of friends and relatives came to comfort Martha and Mary, and to mourn for Lazarus.
